The Los Angeles campus of the University of California system was founded in 1919 and acquired its current name in 1927. The campus currently enrolls approximately 46,000 students. Its 12 professional schools include dentistry, law, engineering, and medicine. Its School of Theatre, Film, and Television houses an extensive collection of newsreels and films. Over 120 undergraduate and graduate programs are offered. Its main campuses in Berkeley, Los Angeles, and Santa Barbara each offer graduate degrees in science and engineering.
While there are a few things to consider when applying to a UC campus, the majority of UC students receive some form of financial aid. More than two-thirds of UC undergraduate students receive a scholarship or grant. The average award is $15,000, and most families only pay a fraction of that amount. In fact, nearly half of UC students don’t even pay tuition. However, it is still important to complete the FAFSA, which can indicate your eligibility for financial aid.
International students can apply for scholarships through the International Education Finance Corporation. For international students, a co-signer must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. The UC campuses boast a prestigious faculty in almost every field of science. The UC faculty has won 62 Nobel Prizes. Hence, a UC degree is an investment in the future. Its research programs are innovative and productive. Most UC students complete their four-year degrees. This means that they can take advantage of the state’s economic opportunities, and earn a PhD in their field. The University of California’s research programs are truly world-class.
The UC system consists of ten campuses, five medical centers, and three affiliated national labs. The Office of the President of the UC System supports and oversees these campuses and national labs. It also provides centralized labor relations and legal services to its diverse workforce. At the core of the university, there are numerous other branches and units. One campus is known as the UC Berkeley. One of these is the Hastings College of Law.
UC also has numerous satellite locations, all of which are subordinate to the administrators at the Berkeley campus. The California Legislature funded the establishment of the University Farm School at Davis in 1905, and the Citrus Experiment Station in Riverside in 1906. The University of California also acquired a private oceanography laboratory in San Diego in 1912, founded by local business promoters working with a Berkeley professor. In 1944, the university also acquired Santa Barbara State College, a continuation of the State Normal School.
Applicants may apply for federal and state funding for their studies. However, to be considered for federal or state funding, students must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen. Applicants must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid or California Dream Act to be eligible. In addition to these, international students are eligible for some types of financial aid. The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) accepts applications from international students.
UCSD students praise the STEM classes and research conducted by the school. According to the Nature journal, UCSD ranks first in the US in earth and environmental research. It also leads all other UCs in the number of active inventions and US patents. While some students complain about the lack of a party scene at UCSD, there are plenty of other ways to socialize. A number of clubs, organizations, and sports enable students to make friends, participate in sports, and explore their interests.
UCLA has around 31,000 undergraduates. UCLA is the largest with over 20,000 students. While UC Davis and Berkeley are popular, the UC Santa Cruz and UC Merced are the two smallest campuses, with under 8,000 undergraduates. UC Davis and UCLA have an acceptance rate of about 35-45%. The acceptance rate of UC Santa Cruz is slightly higher at 18%. Most UC schools have an acceptance rate of between fifteen and twenty percent.
