The ILSB serves as the university’s innovation center and research hub. The center is located on the pivotal corner between the Commons Plaza and Quad, and symbolizes the vibrant research done by UMBC faculty. The building is made of red brick and large north-facing glass. A notable UMBC graduate is Kathleen Turner, who won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress. Another notable UMBC graduate is chef Duff Goldman.

The University of Maryland, Baltimore County’s building is designed to achieve LEED Silver certification, with chilled beams, glass facades, and a green roof. The building’s innovative “air share” system reduces energy consumption. The main dining hall, the True Grits, is named after the mascot. In the past, UMBC had a live mascot named Campus Sam, which inspired the famous True Grit statue. The statue is rubbed by freshers for good luck, and the main dining hall is named after him.
The Meyerhoff Scholarship Program aims to expand minority and women’s participation in STEM fields.
